[t]Is it okay to create Roster Sections in an imported class?

Q: Is it okay to create Roster Sections in an imported class?

A: It’s very uncommon to create Roster Sections in an imported class. If you’re trying to combine multiple imported Rosters into one “master” class, it’s always better to use a manual “master” class with Linked Roster Sections.

However, there is one case where creating Roster Sections in an imported class may be your best option:

  • You’re teaching a yearlong class.
  • Your school imports a separate copy of the class for each semester.
  • At the start of the year, you didn’t set up a manual “master” class that would let you combine both semesters.
  • It’s the end of semester one and you now have grade data in the semester one class but you need to link in the semester two roster.

Note: Creating Roster Sections in an imported class can cause problems for domain grade exports. It also may not work if your school is still importing semester one enrollment data during semester two. In these cases, you may need to start over with a completely new class for semester two.

If you are unsure about whether this is the right option for you, you can ask your domain administrators by going to Help > Contact Your Organization. Our Term Transition Guide for Administrators also contains more detail on this situation.
